Question Set 2 – Solve problems involving 1D motion

Questions :

A car is moving along a straight highway with a speed of 50 km/h. It uniformly increases its velocity with an acceleration of 5 km/h^2. What is the velocity of the car after 3 hours?

A car is moving along a straight highway with a speed of 60 km/h. It uniformly increases its velocity with an acceleration of 8 km/h^2. How long does it take for the car to reach a velocity of 75 km/h?

A car is moving along a straight highway with an unknown velocity. It uniformly decreases its velocity with an acceleration of 5 km/h^2. If the velocity of the car is 50 km/h after 30 min, what was the starting velocity of the car?

A car moving along a straight highway with a speed of 126 km/h is brought to a stop within 180s. What is the acceleration ( or deceleration as the car as slowing down) of the car?
(assumed uniform)

You started driving from a stop sign. Your acceleration is 10 m/s^2. How long will your car take to reach a velocity of 45 km/hr (Assume uniform velocity)

You started driving from a stop sign. Your acceleration is 10 m/s^2. What is your velocity after 25 sec? After the first 25 sec, you sped up even more to an acceleration of 15 m/s^2. What will be your velocity after 60 sec from the start of the driving? ( assuming uniform velocity in the entire trip)

You started driving from a stop sign. Your acceleration is 8 m/s^2. What is your velocity after 25 sec? After the first 25 sec, you started to bring the car to a stop with an acceleration of 5 m/s^2. How long you were driving the car from the starting point? ( assuming uniform velocity in the entire trip)

Explanations :

A car is moving along a straight highway with a speed of 50 km/h. It uniformly increases its velocity with an acceleration of 5 km/h^2. What is the velocity of the car after 3 hours?

Initial velocity, v0 = 50 km/h

Acceleration, a = 5 km/h^2

Time , t = 5 hrs

Final velocity v = ?

v = v0 + at

v = 50 + 5 x 5 = 75 km/h

A car is moving along a straight highway with a speed of 60 km/h. It uniformly increases its velocity with an acceleration of 8 km/h^2. How long does it take for the car to reach a velocity of 75 km/h?

Initial velocity, v0 = 60 km/h

Acceleration, a = 8 km/h^2

Time , t = ?

Final velocity v = 75 km/h

v = v0 + at

t = (v – v0)/a = ( 75 – 60)/8 = 1.875 h
